Bowen Adventure Challenge: May 29 – June 5, 2010

Register for this year’s Adventure Challenge – a guided trail exploration that will take you to 7 locations hidden on trails throughout the island over the course of a full week.

It’s only $5 for a passport and you’ll get a little something for every point you find, not to mention the possibility that you’ll discover a new trail and that you’ll be showing support for our continuing efforts to enhance the existing trail networks and to create new ones.

Even if you aren’t able to participate in the Challenge, please come out to the prize picnic at the Meadows on Saturday evening (June 5) from 5:30-6pm.

Passports are available at the Meadows at 1pm on Saturday (at the Milk Wagon Trail opening) on May 29 or through Margaret at The Office at Artisan Square on Friday June 4th and Saturday, June 5th.

Dairy Wagon Trail Official Opening

The entire community is welcome to participate in an inaugural walk on the Dairy Wagon Trail!

At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29, you’re invited to join walkers, cyclists and horseback riders on a walk past Killarney Lake and onto the newly opened Dairy Wagon Trail. The trail has recently been widened to accommodate cyclists and horses in addition to walkers, and it winds upward from the boardwalk at Killarney Lake to the Smith Road neighborhood. This portion of the Killarney Lake trail was originally built and travelled primarily by horse, or by horse and wagon back in Bowen’s early days.

The walk commences at the equestrian ring near the site of the old dairy at the Meadows in Crippen Park at 1 p.m. Members of the Greenways Committee and Bowen Island Horse Owners and Riders Association (BIHORA) will share the history of the trail, and also give tips for walking, cycling, and driving around horses.

Information tables will be set up with pictures of the trail in use throughout its history, as well as a table where you can register for this year’s Adventure Challenge ~ a guided trail exploration that will take you to 7 different locations hidden on trails across the island over the course of a week.

Bring your friends and families ~ and please keep your dogs on leash. This event is free and open to the entire community.

Meet up with fellow equestrians for a casual trail ride at the following spots every week:

Fridays, 1pm, Thompson Crescent cul-de-sac
Tuesdays, 1pm, the Meadows

No need to RSVP, just show up and be ready to ride at 1pm.

BIHORA competes in First CU $10K giveaway

The First Credit Union is giving away $10,000 to a community organization to use towards something that will benefit the whole community.

BIHORA has applied with the intention of using the 10K in partnership with the Municipality to properly complete the Cross-Island trail section on Adams road so that the trail is separated from the roadside and available to pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians alike.

The organization with the most votes wins, so if you feel inspired, please vote online for BIHORA at the link below, and ask your Bowen friends to do the same. Thanks!

Ride and Drive Safely and Pass Horses Slow and Wide

As part of our spring safety and awareness campaign, we’re taking a number of steps
to increase the safety of both horseback riders and motorists alike
when sharing the roads on Bowen Island.

You may have seen our banner hanging over the road as you drive off
the ferry – and a safety rack card is about to hit residents’
mailboxes in the next week. Attached please find a news release which
complements the banner and rack card in disseminating our message to
the community.

Manure Sale Saturday, March 20

Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to give your garden a boost than with composted manure from Bowen’s own horses.

When: Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 10am until noon, unless sold out earlier
Where: Bowen Island Community School (BICS) parking lot
Cost: $5/bag or 3 bags for $12

Return your sturdy used manure bags to us at the sale so that we can use them again.

Horse manure compost has many uses including in gardens, mixed with potting soil, mulching around trees and shrubs and mulching lawns. Horse manure compost is an excellent soil amendment as it not only provides a natural source of nitrogen for plants, it also has other benefits including:

* Improving soil structure, drainage and soil moisture retention during hot, dry months
* Increasing earth worm populations and soil aeration
* Reducing soil compaction
* Increasing available macro and micro nutrients

Milk Road Trail Ride

First club trail ride of the year.

When: Saturday, March 27th, 2010, 1pm
Where: Meet at the BIHORA ring in the Meadows at one o’clock
What: Ride the trail and bridges newly upgraded to shared use, which go from the Meadows along the west side of the Killarney Lake trail to Fernie Rd.

All events subject to change due to weather, insufficient interest or safety concerns.

New Educational Options at UFV

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is introducing several new educational options focused on horse ownership. The first course offered is an introductory course aimed at parents who are contemplating or who have purchased a horse for their children. This course will cover the basics that parents need to know to make a knowledgeable purchase and understand what horse ownership entails. The second course offered covers more in-depth information on Horse Ownership including nutrition, foot care, grooming and more. These courses are taught at the Chilliwack Trades and Technology Center. To find out more about the Equine Studies at UFV call 1-888-504-7441 local 5471. As these programs become popular, the UFV will expand their equine studies programs.

BIHORA is a member service organization dedicated to enhancing and promoting equestrian knowledge, enjoyment, education and opportunities for all ages within our community. We strive to preserve and enhance equestrian use of public lands and shared-use trails.

To preserve a healthy equine lifestyle for our members throughout the island that involves easy, safe, and plentiful access to diverse equestrian opportunities and to preserve and enhance equestrian use of public lands and shared-use trails.
